NCDS ARE THE LEADING CAUSE OF DEATHS AND DISABILITIES WORLDWIDE.

NCDs are responsible for the deaths of 41 million people every year, which accounts for 74% of all global deaths and more than three out of four years lived with disability.

An estimated 80% of NCDs are preventable and are driven by modifiable risk factors, such as: unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol and air pollution.

ABOUT NCDs

IT AFFECTS EVERYONE

THE CHALLENGE

NCDs are one of the biggest health and development challenges of the 21st century. The consequences have worldwide impact, however, the burden is greatest for low-resource communities who are disproportionately affected. 77% of all NCD-related deaths occur in low- to middle-income countries which undermine socioeconomic and development progress.

NCDs have long-lasting impacts on individuals, families and communities. We’re collaborating with local people to design spaces that allow us to explore healthier options together.

HEALTHIER
x SPACES

OUR APPROACH

The spaces where we live, work and play can have a significant impact on our ability to build stronger, healthier and more resilient communities.

The social determinants of health greatly influence a community’s capabilities to prevent and respond to NCDs, and is directly linked to development and human rights issues. All people have the right to access healthier options, which is why we’re collaborating with multi-sectoral partners to redefine #HEALTHIERxSPACES that activate, mobilise and support integrated solutions.

ACTIVATE.
MOBILISE.
SUPPORT.

Our projects are based on a develop-test-improve model that uses human-centred design, community consultations and pulse-checks to engage relevant stakeholders (activate), co-create community solutions (mobilise) and ensure sustainability (support).

  • Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) or chronic diseases are a group of conditions that are not spread through infection or from person-to-person, but are generally long in duration and often require life-long treatment.

  • The most common types of NCDs include cancers, cardiovascular disease (such as heart attacks and strokes), diabetes, chronic respiratory disease (such as asthma), and ill mental health.

  • NCDs result from a combination of genetic, physiological, environmental and behaviour factors. An estimated 80% of NCDs are preventable and are driven by modifiable risk factors, such as: unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol and air pollution.

  • SDG Target 3.4 is focused on achieving a one-third reduction in premature mortality from noncommunicable diseases through prevention and treatment by 2030, and the promotion of mental health and wellbeing. The world is not currently on track to achieve this goal.

  • Social determinants of health (such as: education, income and gender) enhance vulnerabilities to NCDs and increase exposure to modifiable risk factors. People of low socioeconomic status are at a greater risk to NCDs and are disproportionately affected. Research shows that NCDs are a driver and a consequence of poverty, often affecting communities through a loss of income, out-of-pocket health expenses and lost educational opportunities.
